Eighteen
After a thoroughly enjoyable trip to an art store, Katerina had a sudden case of what Melanthe would have called "the smarts." Being pretty sure that Beatrice would be at work in the clinic, she took the chance of swinging by her townhouse. Unearthing her suitcase and makeup case from a closet, she packed up a selection of clothing, makeup and accessories, carrying them out to the car.
She nabbed her laptop as well, then paused, looking at her computer tower where it sat beneath her desk. She had everything on there... all her creations, graphics, business plans, correspondence, spreadsheets. Everything. She was going to have to remotely access it if she were going to be able to work. What if Beatrice broke the Home Rule and got inside her townhome and destroyed it? For that matter, she had no idea what computer skills Beatrice had, but could she be able to trace Katerina through a remote connection?
Just call me paranoid, she chastised herself, even while she was unplugging cords from the tower. She lugged the heavy thing down to her car, then made another trip back for the equally heavy, expensive, high-end printer. Everything else would have to wait, or she would buy new, but she wasn't coming back here until this was all over. One way or the other.
She drove for an hour, making random turns here and there, always checking her rear view mirror. Finally certain she didn't have a tail... her inner Cat nyuk'd at the pun... she headed on a circuitous route to Troy's. On a well-traveled road just a few miles away from his house, and in the opposite direction from the veterinary clinic, she came across just the kind of place she'd been looking for. The inn was an old Victorian style house set well back off the road, refurbished and turned into a bed-and-breakfast. As an additional bonus, the main parking area was behind the house, out of sight of the road.
Walking up the steps to the back door, she admired the graceful structure. It was painted a soft green, the white gingerbread making a pleasing contrast. Whimsical prints pointed the way to the lobby at the front of the building. Stepping into the airy room with wide windows overlooking the front porch, she had to laugh. Laying on a rug near a snug fireplace was a large, shaggy white dog with a small gray tabby cat draped over the dog's side, practically buried in the thick fur. The dog lifted its head to look at her, thumped its tail once in a friendly manner, then flopped back down to resume his nap. The cat, matching her canine cushion, blinked sleepily at Katerina, yawned wide, and went back to sleep.
Behind the counter, a tall, lean black gentleman reflected her amusement. "Folks are always startled to see such an unlikely pair as our Tony and Maria there."
Katerina stared at him a moment, then burst into delighted laughter. "Tony and Maria? West Side Story?"
His smile widened to a grin.
